My Hair Care Routine: Tips & Secrets

Spilling all my secrets…

If I had a nickel for how many times people asked me what my “haircare secrets” are…

The amount of compliments I receive about my hair daily makes me want to just collapse in a puddle of tears because it’s just so dang sweet. IT’S JUST SO SWEET, Y’ALL!

But lemme tell ya… my hair hasn’t always been healthy and gorgeous! That’s why I wanted to share an entire blog post on my hair care routine — how I take care of it and what products I use to keep it healthy, shiny and happy! Let’s get into the goodness!

A little hair history…

5 years ago, I made the mistake (yes I said “mistake”) of dying my hair and doing a kind of ombre/balayage situation. My hair has always been LONNGGG, like down past my behind. I decided to die my hair and since I have naturally dark hair, the hairstylist had to BLEACH my hair. The color was gorgeous — don’t get me wrong. But the bleaching sucked all my hair’s natural moisture.

A few years ago, the split ends got so bad that I was like, “Okay, okay. I’m done with color for awhile and I NEED to figure out a solid hair care routine.”

My Hair Type

Ever since I was a little baby, I have been blessed with long, thick hair! My dad remembers picking me up from the foster home in Korea and thinking, “Wow! That’s a lot of hair on a little baby.” The texture of my hair is more straight/slightly wavy.

How I Take Care of My Hair

As far as washing is concerned, I usually wash my hair every three to four days. I used to wash my hair everyday, but it’s a lot of work for me and I’ve heard some say that it’s better to go as many days as possible without washing. (Read this article to learn a little bit more about how often to wash!) My hair holds curl really well so I like to make the curl last as long as possible!

Like I said, I loveee curly hair and I use a curling iron on it often. But I try to make my curls last a few days so that I don’t put toooo much heat on it. We all know that heat damages our hair, causes breakage, split ends and dryness. So I probably curl my hair 2-3x a week, depending on what I am doing or if I’m shooting! (See how I curl my own hair here!)

A biggg tip I have for taking care of your hair is to avoid putting it in a tight ponytail all the time! When we ladies put our hair up in a tight pony tail often, it can cause our hair to break from being too tight. It’s not bad to put it up every once and awhile, just don’t do it all the time. It’ll save your hair from breaking and from getting strange bald patches at your hairline!

As far as trimming goes, I recommend that you get your hair trimmed at least every three months! I go in every 2 1/2 - 3 months to cut off all the split ends and dead hair. During that time, I also get my layers redone and sometimes I get it thinned (thick hair probs). Trimming just overall helps stimulate healthy growth and keeps your hair looking healthy and beautiful — versus straggly dead ends!

The last part of my routine is to put your hair in a loose braid or loose bun when you sleep. Also, I’ve heard great things about silk pillowcases, but I’ll need to do some more research on that! I’ve found that when I put my hair in a braid at night, it a) keeps the hair out of my face and b) contains it so it doesn’t break or get pulled on! Always use a scrunchie — they’re so gentle on your hair!

My Go-To Hair Care Products

My haircare “routine” wouldn't be the same without my favorite products! Over the years, I’ve accumulated some of the best products for my hair — and really every hair type! Click on the names of each product to SHOP & LEARN MORE!

  • OGX Shampoo & Conditioner: I have been using OGX shampoo & conditioner for probably two years now and LOVE IT! Their prices are drugstore and their quality is top notch. My favorite scent is called “Coconut Milk” and it gives a deep clean while adding softness and hydration! Plus it smells like heaven on earth!

  • Pantene Micellar: I don’t know about you — but sometimes, my hair/scalp gets very itchy and irritated from dry shampoo build up. Sometimes you just need a really good deep cleaning shampoo — and this is my favorite shampoo for that job! It refreshes your scalp and leaves it feeling squeaky clean and less irritated.

  • Dove Dry Shampoo: Hands down the best. You can’t beat this drugstore dry shampoo ($7 — I mean c’mon). They have a few different types specifically for giving volume, cleansing and refreshing. My favorite is the Coconut Dry Shampoo that gives me great volume and a refresher to oily, day 3 hair!

  • Keratin Oil: Because of my split end situation, I like to use keratin oil on the ends of my hair to bring back some moisture and shine. Damaged hair can start to look dull so oils bring back some life! My favorite is any kind of keratin oil. It smells great, brings shine and your hair will suck it right up!

  • Redken’s Rebel Tame/Frizz Dismiss: This is one of my HOLY GRAIL products! I discovered this product through my mom. This Redken product is a cream that you put in your hair when it’s damp and then blow dry. Your hair will feel like a Pantene model’s hair — NO JOKE. This product makes your hair silky, shiny, smell amazing and it DOUBLES AS A HEAT PROTECTANT. Sometimes I even run a dime size amount through my dry hair at it’s ends. You need this!

  • Wet Brush: I’m going to be honest — I used to think that these hair brushes were gimmicky. But I’ve been using them for almost five years now and they have changed the game. Wet brushes are great for saving your hair from breakage! They are the most gentle brushes that you can use for wet, damp and dry hair! Start brushing at the bottom and then work your way up so you don’t pull all da hair out!

YOU’VE MADE IT!

We’ve made it to the end of my haircare routine! The past five years have been, more or less, of a journey to find products that smell good, feel good and do good for my hair. And these products do just that for me and don’t break the bank!

Sooo… now I'M curious! What are some of your favorite haircare products? Tell me about your hair routine in the comments! Are you as obsessed with pretty hair as I am?!
