About a month ago, I took the weekend off of Instagram. In fact, I deleted the app off my phone so I wouldn’t be tempted to open it (like I am most of my day). During those few days, I found that I had so much time to think and process. It was actually super refreshing! I’d encourage you to take a few days off social media as well… but that’s not what I’d like to chat about with you lovelies today.

There have been a lot of crazy stuff happening in the political world/media/government over the last couple of weeks. I’m sure you’ve seen it. Now, I don’t want to get political or dramatic because that’s just not helpful. But I do want to talk about something that God has put on my heart!
Let’s talk about opinions. We all have ‘em. We all have reasons why we think the way that we do and why we believe what we do. For some reason, a majority of our society just goes with the flow. They side with the world’s “popular opinion” because it’s easier than having a different, unpopular opinion that may be met with negativity.
But I’m here today to remind you that if you have given your life to Christ, your life is going to be full of “unpopular opinions.” The things that we say, do and think may be a lot different from the world. The things that shape the way we live and show us how to walk may seem unpopular. That’s not the easiest reality to grasp, but I can promise you that it is more fulfilling and worthwhile that any “popular opinion” today.
“Do not be conformed to this world, but be transformed by the renewal of your mind, that by testing you may discern what is the will of God, what is good and acceptable and perfect.”
Over and over in the Bible, we are encouraged to be different, set apart and bold. We’re placed in the world to light it up with truth, not to be conformed. We’re placed in the world to introduce something new, something better. We’re placed in the world to do God’s will and make His name great. We’re placed in this world to be an important part of God’s plan. It’s a unique challenge, but God’s given us everything we need (2 Peter 1:3).
The world says one thing, but God says another. How are we supposed to know what God wants us to do when the world is screaming something else at us? Friend, I’ve struggled so many times trying to figure out what’s true in social media, the news and even from friends. Ultimately, nothing answered my question until I realized that I needed truth to set me free. I needed facts and hope that were unshakable. I needed something that I could rely on when the world around me started to get confusing.
“The law of the Lord is perfect, reviving the soul… The commandment of the Lord is pure, enlightening the eyes…”
Sweet friends, the only way to be sure and unshakable in a sea of “popular opinions” and “untested theories” is to love and learn TRUTH. We need to be people who love, keep and live out God’s Word. The more that we love and learn what God has to say about life, the more we will understand today’s issues and opinions. Our sweet Father promises to “enlighten our eyes” to what is true; truth may be unpopular to a majority of the world we live in, but we can be sure that we have hope and that it’s worth fighting for.
Maybe you’re thinking, “Ugh. I look around and I don’t believe what everyone else is believing. I know there’s something more, but I’m scared. I don’t want to be ‘that person’ that doesn’t agree with everyone, that doesn’t go with the flow. What do I do?”
Ephesians 2:10 reminds us that we were created for more than the world’s “popular opinions.” We were created for more than life on earth. We were created to love and pursue people now so that we can join Jesus in heaven one day.
We don’t need to fear; we need to love and gently remind people of truth. Your life is going to look different from the world’s if you are living for Jesus. That may seem like a “bad” thing, but it’s really the BEST THING EVER. You are a child of the One True King. That’s pretty extraordinary if you ask me. And a child of God is called HIGHER. They’re called to carry bigger burdens, with their Father’s help of course.
I’d rather do what’s popular in God’s eyes than what’s popular in the world’s eyes.
What’s an unpopular opinion that you have?
