What's the Big Deal About Valentine's Day?

Happy (almost) Valentine's Day, sweet friends!

Some of you may be jumping up and down because of this day — and then maybe there are some of you who are rolling their eyes and shrugging their shoulders.Up until the last three years, I never really celebrated Valentine's Day. The most that I did was give my gal pals at school some candy and call it a day. Occassionally, my parents would give me a card and some candy but... that's it.

So it makes you wonder... what is the point of Valentine's Day? What's it really about? It's not really about the chocolates, cards, balloons, teddy bears or roses. (Even though you seem to run into a ginormous teddy bear everytime you're in the grocery store.)It's not even about romance or relationships or having a dinner date. It's about validation.

Within our God-given DNA, we feel a deep desire to be wanted. We crave belonging and a connection with a soul that is so overwhelming. There's a part of our souls that craves the feeling of intimacy and the feeling of being loved. Woven into our DNA is are the desires to be valued, loved and cherished.Isn't that why it hurts so much when we don't have a date? Isn't that why some of us feel the need to "go all out" with the teddy bears and chocolates and roses? The bottom line is that our souls desire intimacy and belonging. Our souls need to be affirmed by someone else in love. Friends — I am here to offer you a glimmer of hope. And this is for anyone — no matter if you're married, engaged, dating or single.God never intended for your self worth to be dependent on whether or not you have a valentine. He never wanted you to define yourself by your relationship status or your plans on February 14th

.Imagine a five gallon bucket. That five gallon bucket is your heart/your love tank. If I fill the bucket with earthly things, it'll soon overflow and create a huge mess. Why? Because those things don't fit in my heart — they don't satisfy and give my heart what it truly needs. I HAVE GOOD NEWS! The ache that you feel in your heart for true love is made to point you in one direction -- right to Jesus, the lover of your soul.

Friends, God is so generous to remind us of that. All of us -- like I said, this is for everyone, no matter their relationship. There is nothing in this world that will ever compare to the love that our Creator has for us. The great news is that God hasn't held ANYTHING back from us -- the Bible is full of validation for our souls. He promises to answer our need for love over and over, if you only let Him in.Consider these beautiful truths..."My [Jesus] command is this: Love each other as I have loved you. Greater love has no one than this, that He lay down His life for His friends." (John 15:12-13)"But God demonstrates His own love for us in this: While we were still sinners, Christ died for us." (Romans 5:8)"Are not five sparrows sold for two pennies? Yet not one of them is forgotten by God. Indeed, the very hairs of your head are numbered. Don't be afraid; YOU are worth more than many sparrows." (Luke 12:6-7)

God says you are His beloved (Psalms 127:2) and the "apple of His eye" (Psalm 17:8).But most importantly — what Jesus did on the cross screams "I LOVE YOU" the loudest. When He died on the cross to save you from your sins, His hands scretched out, as if He was saying, "I LOVE YOU AND YOU ARE WORTH IT TO ME!" So don't ignore the gnawing on your heart to be loved on Valentine's Day. Please don't chalk it up to "hormones" or whatever you'd like to call it. But don't fall for the lie that just anything will be able to fill that desire. No matter how many chocolates we eat or if we have a date or not — remember that God has hung a banner of love over you. Remember that He has demonstrated His love for you in full force and He is waiting to remind you of that love again. Don't ever run to other things to fill your love tank — soak in the truly soul-satisfying love from your Father.
