The Truth About New Years Resolutions

Happy New Year! Can you believe that it's 2019?! Are you someone who makes New Years resolutions? Personally, I never have but I've been thinking a lot about them. What's the point of making resolutions anyway? The most common resolutions that people make are to workout more, eat healthier and save more money. There's also resolutions like losing a certain amount of weight, traveling more or shopping less. Those all sound like good things, right? They seem to have good intentions behind them. They all intend to better people -- whether physically or emotionally. As 2018 came to a close, I really started seeking the Lord about this topic."Lord, are there any new year's resolutions you think I should be implementing?" It wasn't long after questioning that the Lord dropped some MAJOR truth into my lap.He reminded me what really matters. He reminded me what I, as a follower of Christ, should truly resolve to do.

Followers of Christ are called to make the pursuit of GOD their greatest resolution!

The reason that people's resolutions always seem to fall apart is because they don't have the right motivation. Yes, we're striving to better ourselves, but often, we miss the point. The point of life is to LOVE, FOLLOW, SERVE, PURSUE and SEEK God!

It's so easy to be all-consumed with our goals and plans. It's so easy to think that we have to accomplish this to look like this... or accomplish this to make this much money. But friends, that is a disappointing way to live. God, in His lavish grace, sent His Son to be the price for sin so that we may live new lives. So that we would no longer live for ourselves, but for God, His glory and His kingdom. He offers so much more.Hebrews 13:20-21 came to mind: "Now may the God of peace who brought again from the dead our Lord Jesus, the great shepherd of the sheep, by the blood of the eternal covenant, equip you with everything good so that you may do His will, working in us that which is pleasing in His sight, through Jesus Christ, to whom be glory forever and ever. Amen." (ESV) That is the gospel right there.

Because of what Jesus did on the cross, we have been given life, a better life. The author of Hebrews prays for born-again believers, that they would be equipped with everything good to do God's will. And it tells us that God is so pleased when we do His will! When we realize that God's will, no matter how unknown it may be, is always good and right... our lives will be changed. The way we live, the way we talk and the way we walk will change. When we grasp the soverignity of our Lord and His love for us, we will be forever changed. When we live according to God's will and not our own, it's a beautiful demonstration of our love for God.

All of this to say... Make God your greatest resolution. Not only this year, but every year. Every month. Every week. Every day. Every second. The word "resolution" is defined as something that you make up your mind to do. Is this something that you'd like to do? Pray and ask the Lord for His help! Ask Him to help you seek Him. Ask Him to help you be a diligent reader and doer of the Bible.Let's jump into 2019 with great expectation and great obedience. Expect that God will do immeasurably more this year, because HE WILL. That doesn't mean that there won't be hard times -- but through hard times, we will always have the Lord to lean on (2 Corinthians 12:9-10). God will always bring things into our lives for our good, growth and His glory.Be obedient to the Lord's will. Align your heart with His heart. Ask God to make His will your will.If you genuinely want to make this resolution real in your life, ask the Lord. He is eagerly waiting for you to ask Him for His help. He wants nothing more than you to make Him your greatest resolution.
